The Town of Frisco is excited to host a free gear repair fair on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Frisco Historic Park. Sew Tough Repair and Town of Frisco staff will be on site to patch holes and repair minor tears in outdoor equipment such as coats, tents, and backpacks. A Rebel Sports bike mechanic will also be at the event to provide simple bicycle repairs.
This is a new Town of Frisco event, created by Frisco’s staff sustainability committee known as the Green Team. The event was inspired by existing programs developed by several outdoor gear manufacturers that facilitate the repair, reuse, resale, and recycling of used gear.
“With such an outdoor-focused community, we can expect quite a bit of outdoor equipment to become torn up after hard use, and just contribute to landfill waste. This event supports Frisco’s sustainability goals by encouraging community members to stop by, say hello, and get that equipment functioning again,” stated Emily Crawford, Frisco’s finance administrative assistant and Green Team member.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 146.1 million tons of solid waste ended up in landfills across the country in 2018, with materials most commonly used in outdoor equipment such as plastics, leather and textiles comprising over 29% of that waste.
The Green Team asks that each attendee only bring one (clean) piece of equipment as well as their own cup or mug for the beverages that will be provided. Pizza and snacks will also be provided.
