Moving from Stage 2 to Less Strict Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

Summit County’s wildfire danger has relaxed from “extreme’ to “high”, and subsequently, Summit County, all area Towns, and the Dillon Ranger District of the White River National Forest are able to move to back to Stage 1 fire restrictions from the stricter Stage 2 fire restrictions.

Remain Vigilant

It is vital that we remain vigilant though, as we are expecting another drier period, as we move into autumn and into what we often consider our “second fire season.” You play a pivotal role in preventing wildfires, as more than 80% of wildfires are caused by humans. It’s important to be aware of and abide by current fire restrictions.

Fire professionals determine whether fire restrictions need to be enacted and have determined that current conditions warrant restrictions to protect the community from wildfires across all of Summit County and our public lands. Here is what is allowed and not allowed while stage one (1) fire restrictions are in effect.

Not Allowed

❌ Open fires
❌ Fireworks, explosives, or tracer ammunition
❌ Using chainsaws without a USDA or SAE-approved spark arrestor
❌ Disposal of any burning item outdoors, including cigarettes, cigars, matches, etc…

Allowed Activities

✅ Campfires in permanent metal or concrete rings within designated Forest Service campgrounds. Remember to have water close by and to put out fires completely before leaving or going to bed.
✅ Backyard fire pits with ember screens and an active permit from your fire protection district. Remember to have water close by and to put out fires completely before leaving or going to bed.
✅ Gas, charcoal, or pellet grills, stoves, and smokers.
✅ Liquid or gas-fueled fire pits, tables, lanterns, and heaters
